Burn! Little Universe.

2025 January 11

Warning: I'm bad at describing what music sounds like to me.

This is one of those albums that just kinda, appeared in my life, I don't really listen to music from China otherwise, and I'm unfortunately that kind of insufferable person who just listens to to music that just "sounds good to me." That said, I just wanted to share this album, the first track 燃烧吧!小宇宙 (Burn! Little Universe), is just one of my favorite pieces of music period, and I have alot of personal attachment to. It feels weird to say that considering I cannot understand anything their saying, but music is supposed to have the power to transcend language, right? The group itself, 牛奶@咖啡 (Milk@Coffee) just consists of 2 people and information about them atleast in english is naturally gonna be pretty scarce, aside from the lone wikipedia page.

Talking about music if far from my forte, and I'm not trying to push this album as anything more than it's supposed to, especially with my near 0 knowledge of what chinese music is otherwise, It has a few high energy and fun sounding tracks, but most of it is of the slower, sorta ballad type. Emotional might be the word to describe It?

Besides the track I mentioned, other favorites that come to mind are Lasia,忘记, and 只有我们知道的地方.

Lasia happens to be my girlfriends favorite track, I found her reasoning interested when she first told me, something along the lines of "I guess I can feel more connection to that song because of the singular english word used throughout."

忘记(Forget) is a lovely, slower, more emotional track, It has a very lovely acoustic guitar melody... It feels nostalgic. It's also the only song on the album where the male member of the 2 person group sings solely.

只有我们知道的地方(A place only we know) i listened many a time during my Vietnam trip, specifically on those arduous bus trips in the country. I associate this song with the hot, dry days of seeing the vietnamese countryside, alongside my yearning to be back in the states.

太空蛋糕(Space Cake) is a fun track, but not one too notable to me, other than the fact it apparently samples Katamari Damacy according to my girlfriend.

燃烧吧!小宇宙 (Burn! Little Universe), the track that really hooked me in, high energy, poppy, fun track. The best word i can use to describe is, Magical, or Wondrous. That would also probably be the best way to describe it's somewhat odd music video.

Like many things I find odd, it loops back to being quite charming to me anyhow.

Milk@Coffee is still active, though only sporadically over the years, though in 2023 they released a single which is nice. I can't really speak for their other albums/singles though, I definitely listened to some of them over the years, but I guess they never quite struck the same chords that Burn! Little Universe did for me.

Give this album a listen, their thankfully on streaming which is nice, alongside on Youtube, I'd like to hear your opinions on it if you do give it a shot.

As ridiculous as it sounds, I found this song cause it was a ringtone on old motorola phones(twitter link, bewarned.) This song, and the exact ringtone file for that matter, has been my ringtone on my phone for a long time.
